How to Wash Reusable Grocery Bags and Keep Them Clean

A recent study funded by the American Chemistry Council found that nearly every reusable bag examined for bacteria contained bugs, coliform bacteria (suggesting raw-meat or uncooked-food contamination) or E. coli. However, the study didn’t specify which strains of E. coli were found-many of which are harmless. And don’t forget that the American Chemistry Council represents plastic bag makers, and opposes a California Bill that would ban single-use plastic bags.

What is slightly more annoying (dare we say misleading?) about this study, and the buzz surrounding it, is that if you conduct a similar study of kitchens, refrigerators, sponges, or dish towels, we’re sure you’d find equally alarming results. Plus, with the abundance of over-packaged grocery store items, what are the chances that these germs are actually going come in contact with your food or your family? Regardless of the study’s motives, it does stress an important reminder: clean your reusable grocery bags regularly.

So how do you keep all the different bag materials clean? It really depends on what it’s made of. Cotton reusable grocery bags and many hemp reusable grocery bags are machine washable and dryer safe-making them the easiest to wash. If it is screenprinted or dyed in any way, you should wash in cold water for the first few washings. Some polyester reusable grocery bags can be machine washed, but we only recommend machine washing ‘poly-canvas’.

Nonwoven polypropylene and recycled PET reusable bags are trickier to clean. Some people do wash these bags in a washing machine, but we don’t recommend it. If you feel you must machine wash these bags, use cold water only and definitely don’t put them in the dryer. However, machine washing shortens the overall lifespan and can ruin them.

We recommend hand washing your non woven polypropylene reusable bags in a sink filled with warm, antibacterial soapy (preferably antibacterial) water. Let them air dry completely, both inside out AND right side out. This ensures all the seams, nooks, and crannies are dry and aren’t retaining any moisture that can turn into mold. Non woven polypropylene can also be sprayed down with an antibacterial spray cleaner, but remember to turn the bags inside out and carefully clean the inner seams.

Nylon or poly-nylon reusable bags should be hand washed in warm soapy water and hung to dry-again, inside out and right side out to ensure all the moisture is gone on the inside.

Laminated reusable bags (either laminated polypropylene or laminated recycled PET) should be wiped down with a wet cloth or “washed” with a disinfectant spray. Other non-fabric reusable shopping bags can also be cleaned this way.

Finally, our best tip: sort and assign specific bags to specific tasks:

MEAT: Choose a bag that’s easily identifiable. For example, look for a specific personalized reusable shopping bag, color or design that will remind you that this is your ‘meat bag’. Make sure it’s made of machine washable material. Pull it from your pile and put the meat on top at checkout, then tell the cashier to use that bag for meat. Don’t forget to wash it when you get home.

PRODUCE: Use a reusable shopping bag for produce to avoid plastic produce bags. Unload your fruits and veggies at checkout, then reload them into the same bag. Don’t forget to wash your bag, and your produce, when you get home.

PREPACKAGED FOODS: Once your meat and produce bags are separated, you’ll know that the rest of your bags are only used for prepackaged foods and groceries. With layers & layers of packaging used these days, your food should be more than safe.

Free Grocery Coupons Help Battling Families

A free grocery coupon can save you a lot of money if you have the luxury of finding one in your area. Unfortunately, here in Australia we have some of the most expensive groceries in the world apparently according to some recent surveys. This doesn’t surprise me because when you have lived in an overseas country for any lengthy period of time you get a very different perspective on a lot of things including groceries.

Groceries may sound like a mundane and uninteresting topic for an article but just remember that everyone gets hungry once or twice a day. It’s only the really lucky ones who get to satisfy that hunger.

Even so, with the cost of living rising dramatically in most western countries, most housewives or grocery buyers are all looking for the best deals they can find. What can be saved on the groceries can go a long way towards paying off those rising energy bills. It’s a bit like “robbing Peter to pay Paul” but as most families today are what Australians call “battlers” ( those who live from pay day to pay day) any savings are more than welcomed.

Here in Australia, our grocery costs are largely dictated by two major players who are in cahoots no matter how much they may deny it to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. It is an impossible ask of an under-funded and under-staffed Govt. sanctioned organisation to be able to adequately monitor large shareholder Companies like Coles and Woolworths. The other player in the Australian grocery scene is the Independent Grocers Association (IGA) but they don’t yet have the numbers to access or control the buying power like the big two. And the big two are everywhere in Australia from the remote inland locations of regional towns in the outback to every suburb in the big cities.

And the “little Aussie Battlers” are Australia wide but we get offered ‘weekly specials’ in our mailboxes every two weeks or so and that is the best we get until we get a chance at Christmas time to enter a competition for free groceries. The big two grocery supermarkets in Australia don’t have to work very hard to make a profit or to get their fair share of the buying public. Everyone has to eat. Every now and then for the sake of appearances, the big two will put on a marketing show for us so that we can never be absolutely sure they are in cahoots and some towns will benefit from these activities but rarely do they extend beyond state borders.

As you have probably gathered, Australians are not well served by their stores that sell groceries and it is something that the Australian Federal Government is talking about investigating but there aren’t too many ‘Aussie battlers’ who are holding their breathe for this to happen. People seem to think it will go the same way as the Petrol price investigation.

So most Australian “battlers” will just have to wait until next Christmas to have another chance at winning any free grocery coupons.

Family Grocery Shopping and Saving Money – Menu Planning

Let me share with you a secret that has saved me countless hours during my week — it’s menu planning. It may sound simple, but it really works. Menu planning can also give you extra money in your pocket. I have to confess though, I haven’t always been consistent with it, and so all the more reason I have something to compare it to.

The concept is quite simple really. Instead of walking aimlessly through the aisles in your local grocery store and purchasing an amazing deal of bulk dehydrated bacon on a whim — that you never end up using anyways — spend some time at the beginning of your week and decide what your meals are for that week. There are two known reasons that cause people to spend more money at the grocery store — no list, and if you’re hungry. So you break down and buy a king size candy bar, big deal, right? But then you forget the milk and the stick of butter. And then you get home, you’ve enjoyed your decadent appetizer, five o’clock rolls around and for some mysterious reason — even though you just spent $200 — you have nothing and no idea what to cook for dinner for your party of five.

Time-Saver

Menu planning isn’t a grueling task but it does take some time — time that is given back when you get to the store and you know exactly what you want. Here’s the process in a nutshell, or at least how I do it.

  1. Make a list of all your favorite dishes.
  2. Decide on how many new dishes you want to try a week. This could vary from 0 to 7 — depending on how big your favorite dish list is and how adventurous you are.
  3. Look through your freezer and cupboards. What ingredients or meats do you have that need to be used, or that you’ve forgotten about?
  4. Pick 0 to 7 of your favorite dishes, and then browse your cookbooks and pick 0 to 7 new recipes — keeping in mind the ingredients in your freezers and cupboards that have to get used up — so of course you have 7 total recipes for that week.
  5. Decide on the side dishes to go with the main meal. For example if we’re having lasagne, I’ll throw in garlic bread and a salad.
  6. Make your grocery list from your menu plan.

At this point, I do something a little extra. I write the favorite dishes down on an index card with the side dishes included. As I try new recipes, and if I like them, I do the same thing. So eventually I’ll have a bunch of index cards with all my favorite meals. And then when the week is beginning, I just rotate through those cards adding a couple of new dishes as I go. You could just keep building that rotation schedule until you never have to browse a cookbook again! You could even go a step beyond that and write a grocery list for those ingredients on the backs of your index cards. Sounds a little obsessive compulsive I know, but there will be no more staring at your shelves wondering what to cook tonight.

If this sounds like too much, there are numerous menu planning books out there that do just that — make a plan and a shopping list for you.

Money-Saver

If the saving time doesn’t get you, or the abhorrence of that dreaded question what can I cook for dinner tonight? Then maybe the money-saving aspect will grab you. Just think about it — if you have a list of dishes that you know everyone in your family loves, then you’ll also know what ingredients you need. You’ll then be able to keep a look-out for bulk deals on meats or canned products that you may use in those dishes. This can save you so much money in the long run! And of course we already mentioned, the risk of haphazard buying now that there’s a list in your hand significantly diminishes.

This is something that you need to tailor to your family, so take some of my guides if they’ll help or check out the numerous menu-planning books out there.

Saving Money on Your Grocery Bills

How is your grocery bill month to month? Do you end up spending more than you wanted every month? If you’re at all like me, a working wife and mother, grocery shopping and meal time can be a stressful and time consuming endeavor. And, if getting the meal on the table for a descent price isn’t enough, there is the health issue that factors in. Attempting to provide healthy meals that won’t empty the pocketbook can be difficult to find! With some great tips, you will see the benefits you receive when you start shopping smart and eating at home. It is worth it!

The following are easy ideas to help you save money when you go to the grocery store and when you are at home cooking…

Be creative

If you forgot or forget something at the store think about what else you might be able to use. For example, I have forgotten to grab butter (a staple item) and potato soup was on the menu for the night. I substituted olive oil for butter that night and it worked great!

Use leftovers

For example, if you have stuff left over from week one, use it the next. Use up all salad stuff and things that can go bad, even if you have to create a new meal that isn’t on your meal plan. Wasted food = wasted money.

Be a smart shopper!

I think that often people are not prepared when they do go grocery shopping and end up spending more money than they intended to on food that is not healthy for them. Remember the stuff from the meal plan information!

  • First, do the preparation work at home. Look at the local ads before you go. Make meal plans according to the ads from that week.
  • Second, be flexible! Recently, while at a grocery store, I saw a special on good quality split chicken breast. They were $1.48/lb. which was a savings of $1.41/lb. off what they normally cost. When I saw them, I had never bought split chicken breast and wasn’t sure of the differences when comparing them to regular chicken breast. So, I asked the guy behind the meat counter. He explained that there was a small bone in the back of the meat that could easily be cut or picked out. I was sold! After cooking the meat to make the meals, I think I actually like this cheaper meat better! It was juicier than my normally boiled chicken breasts come out.
  • Third, do not go to the shops hungry! Why does it seem that you rush off to the grocery store and once there, while shopping for food, you suddenly realize that you are very hungry? This almost guarantees that you will spend money on food that you don’t need and is most likely not healthy for you.

Be prepared

When you leave to go shopping, pick a time where you don’t feel rushed. This will better help you to stick to your list and to eating better foods!

Have staples on hand

Here is a list of things to have on hand for cooking and baking. These are the items I have found most helpful. Look through the list and decide what items your family uses – add and subtract items as it makes sense for you and your family.

  • Honey
  • White Flour
  • Wheat Flour
  • Cornmeal
  • Quick Oats
  • Shortening or Lard
  • Oil – olive or grape seed are best
  • Potatoes
  • Yeast
  • Frozen Vegetables (whatever is cheap and your family likes)
  • Mustard
  • White Sugar
  • Brown Sugar
  • Vanilla
  • Herbs/spices – like garlic, cumin, ginger, parsley, oregano, chili, etc.
  • Bouillon Cubes (Chicken)
  • Bread Crumbs
  • Soy Sauce
  • Worcester Sauce
  • Butter (tub)
  • Sticks of Butter
  • Cornstarch

Start meal planning!

What is a meal plan, you might be thinking. A meal plan is exactly that, putting together a plan for your meals – deciding what you are going to eat and putting it in to practice. There are many reasons to have a meal plan. Here are a few of those reasons and why they are important.

  • Save money through a meal plan – Make a meal plan according to ingredients. Put recipes and meals together so that ingredients are not wasted because they are not needed and are, therefore, unused.
  • Save time through having a plan and shopping lists – When you go to the grocery store, you will have a list to go from and won’t by unneeded or overpriced items.
  • Spend more time together as a family – With a meal plan, you will consequently eat more at home. Dinnertime is a great opportunity to talk and spend time together. Take advantage of this!
  • Save energy – With a meal plan you will make fewer trips to the grocery store. A meal plan enables you to stop thinking about what you’ll make for dinner that night, what ingredients you still need for it, and how to put it together. A meal plan helps you to be organized!
  • Eat healthier – You won’t be going out as much with a meal plan ready for you – this will help you eat healthier foods at home! You will eat a better variety of foods since you’ve thought about it ahead of time. You can plan for healthier meals and start to understand what is going into your body. Thinking through the food you eat will automatically make you more aware and hopefully help you make wise decisions!

Free Grocery Offers Review

There are loads of free grocery offers available online today. Some of them are presented in a straight forward click here and get free groceries while others are found from free groceries directory. At the back of your mind i am pretty sure you will be wondering if this is a scam?

Now let us demystify this mystery. Firstly, this offer is indeed real and true. The grocery card would indeed be sent to your home addressed to you once you completed the participation required. Yes! The catch is you have to participate.

Participation in the program usually includes the following:

  1. Entering of zip code (no harm done here)
  2. Entering of Address and contact (depending on how you view things but i guess this is needed in order to deliver your grocery card to you. Thou i would have preferred if they did it after the participation process is done.)
  3. Taking part in a survey of about 4 question
  4. Last but not least, the most important part, taking part in trials or making a purchase.

The grocery card you can get would range between $50-$250 and this is largely dependent on the type of participation you do. If you are only taking part in product trials, than it is likely you will be rewarded with a prepaid grocery card of $50. Purchase of products would naturally give you a higher return. What you would have to note is that if you are taking part in the trail, always ensure that you cancel the trial once the trail period expire. This is probably the only catch you have to be aware of.

A full-time debt reduction consultant till I went into semi-retirement, what I really love to do today is to blog on how you can reduce your expense by cutting down on unnecessary expenditure.

Today, grocery shopping is something thou expensive, cant be avoided. Thus one of the best way to make your hard earn money work harder, is to cut down on your grocery bill.

To find more saving money on groceries and even methods on how you can get free grocery.

7 ‘Survival Foods’ Found in Most Grocery Stores

With politicians continuing to do what they do best, which is spend other people’s money like there’s no tomorrow and print more when they run out, there is a very good chance that we in the US will experience much higher inflation before too long and possibly hyperinflation.

When that happens, food prices will skyrocket, and there will be a run on grocery stores. Given that it doesn’t take much to send people into a food-buying frenzy as it is (threat of natural disasters, H1N1 rumors, etc) along with the fact that most grocery stores only keep about 3 days worth of supplies on hand, and there’s a good chance that a lot of people will be left unprepared should such a situation ever occur.

For these reasons and several others, it’s good to at least have a 72-hour food and water supply on hand for you and your family. The problem is, when most people think of stockpiling food, they picture the stereotypical survivalist in a backwoods cabin storing grain in 50 gallon barrels. Since very few people have the time or desire to fill up barrels with grain and drag them to a remote patch of wilderness, most people simply forgo stockpiling all together and just hope for the best.

Instead of simply hoping for the best, I’m going to give you 7 items that you can use to easily stockpile at least 72 hours worth of food, and for much longer if you’d like. Best of all, you won’t even have to set foot in a wheat field in order to get started, since all of the items can be easily found in most grocery and Walmart-type stores. Of course if you go to Walmart, you might have to use your 72-hour food supply just to survive the line :)

Just to clarify, by 72-hours worth of food, I mean that if you and your family had no other source of food, your stockpile should be enough to last for 72 hours. My criteria for a “survival food” is simply a food of high nutritional value, it has an expiration date a year or more away from the day you buy it, and it is a food that you’re already used to eating and know you like. If it’s lightweight and portable, even better.

Keep in mind that the idea here is not to pile up a bunch of food and let it sit for three years. The purpose of your stockpile of food is to have extra food on hand in case your source of food is ever cut off. To keep your supply fresh, you should always be eating the foods from your stockpile and replacing what you eat with fresh supplies. Only when you no longer have a source of food to replace what you eat should the expiration dates of your supplies come into play.

7 ‘Survival Foods’ Found In Most Grocery Stores

1. Tuna Fish and Salmon Pouches

You can buy the cans, but the pouches are significantly lighter and, in my opinion, taste better. I bought several tuna pouches the other day at Walmart. They were on special for $0.99 each and have an expiration date of January 22, 2012. The salmon pouches are a little harder to find and cost more but are still nice to have around. I like to mix the tuna with some hot black beans and either salsa or Tabasco.

2. Peanut Butter

Everyone has their brand of choice, but peanut butter (in my case, creamy JIF) is a cheap, quick source of protein, fats, carbs, and calories when you need them. Most peanut butter will have an expiration date that’s 1.5 – 2 years beyond the date you purchase it. I once hiked all over Missoula, Montana with nothing but a jar of peanut butter, a spoon, and a water bottle equipped with a filter.

3. Dried Pasta

Dried pasta is another cheap, easily accessible ‘survival food’. When stored properly, this stuff can last for years. Boil some water, throw in your pasta, drain, add some tomato sauce, and you’ve got yourself a great-tasting, very filling meal.

4. Canned Goods

Canned food is a great way to store meats, fruits, and vegetables for whenever the fresh options aren’t available. Be sure that the cans you buy are in good condition (no dents), and you’ll have a source of food that will last well beyond a year.

5. Instant/Dehydrated Potatoes

If stored in a cool, dry place, instant potatoes can last for years. When you’re ready to eat, just add water, and you have a great-tasting addition to any meal.

6. Oatmeal

I admit, this one made the list primarily because I created the list. There are probably more essential foods that could have occupied this position, such as rice, but truth be told, I don’t eat a lot of rice, but I eat tons of oatmeal. Like most things on this list, oatmeal is cheap, easy to find, and very easy to prepare. The expiration date will give you about a year to eat it.

In my case, I like to add a little butter, a dash of cinnamon, and a lot of honey. When available, I also like to mix in a handful of fresh blueberries. In addition to breakfast, this is usually my pre-game meal when I play in basketball leagues. When other players’ energy starts to fade in the second half, my oatmeal, honey, and blueberries keep me well-fueled to the finish. Oatmeal can do the same for you, whether you’re surviving or simply starting your day. (Quaker Oats, if you’re reading, how was that for a commercial?)

7. Emergen-C

Emergen-C packets are an easy and portable way for you to load up on several important vitamins and minerals. The packets are dated to last about a year. The instructions recommend that you mix the powder in 4-6 oz of water, but I just fill the glass with about an inch of water, add in the powder, swirl it around, and down it. It tastes great and provides you with a nice energy boost.

Honorable mentions: Rice, Tomato sauce, Honey, Lentils, Pizza Mix, Chocolate

Do NOT forget water when you’re planning your food supply!

When people are preparing their food stockpile, they often forget water. Water is essential for survival as well as the cleaning and preparation of most foods. At the very least, you should have 1 gallon per person per day on hand.

Organic Grocery Shopping on a Budget

Shopping for natural and organic meals to a family of four – without breaking the bank!

Tight budget! Are there two more anxiety-producing – and familiar – words in the English language?

No matter what tax bracket you fall into, you’ve probably got a food budget. If you’re like Jennifer Martin, a stay-at-home mom from Haddon Heights, New Jersey, you’ve got a very tight food budget: $90 a week to feed a family of four. Moreover, you’re trying to make sure everyone in your family gets three healthy meals a day, made with organic ingredients whenever possible.

“Shopping healthy and organic on a budget is really important to me,” says Martin. But that’s not always easy when she’s juggling the preferences of her husband Matthew, a high school history teacher who is “meat and potatoes” kind of guy, a three-year-old daughter, Katie, who’s something of a picky eater (no peanut butter!) and a 15-month-old son, Patrick, who eats “smaller portions of whatever we’re having.”

Martin already has some cost-saving tricks in place to help her stay within her organic budget. She prepares meals from scratch and does all of the cooking herself. She makes extra portions of dinner, which she then packs for lunch the next day for Matthew to take to work. When possible, she buys her fresh fruits and vegetables from a local farmers market where the prices are lower than at the supermarket and the quality is generally better.

Like many people, Martin hasn’t been able to go entirely organic because the food costs more. Instead, she makes her buying choices based on quantity of consumption. “If we eat a lot of it, I try to buy it organic, mostly fruits and vegetables, and cereal. I haven’t been able to make the switchover with milk and meats because of trying to keep costs down, but I’m nervous about the hormones in cows.”

Martin’s doing a great job, but she could get an even bigger organic bang for her buck with some help from an expert. She teamed up with chef Akasha Richmond, a cookbook author and chef-owner of Akasha’s Visionary Cuisine, an organic catering company in Los Angeles. Chef Akasha took Martin to purchase groceries at a local Wegman’s. As a guideline, Chef Akasha used Martin’s $90 budget as well as the “10% organic” goal set by Mission Organic 2010, a campaign launched by The Organic Center, a nonprofit founded to promote organic products. Mission Organic 2010′s objective is simple: for 10% of every food dollar spent to be on organic food production by the year 2010. As a consumer, the easiest way to do this is to make sure that one out of every ten items in your shopping cart is organic.

After taking a look at what foods Martin prepares, Chef Akasha saw a few areas that could use improvement. “She could use more ‘foods that swell.’ Beans and rice, for example, are more economical and can be stretched farther, especially in soups. I also see some more room for better quality meat and more vegetables. For example, organic top sirloin is roughly $6.99 a pound – they don’t even need a pound for two adults and two kids for a stir-fry.” Chef Akasha suggests 12 ounces, plus bulking up the dish with whatever vegetables are on sale. “I’d also like to see her use more ethnic ingredients to spice up her dishes.”

Martin was thrilled with the results of shopping and creating a meal plan with Chef Akasha: an entire menu for a week that includes three meals a day. While the final tally came in about $6 over Martin’s usual budget, the quality of products greatly increased. Only natural foods were chosen for the Martins, 30% of which were organic, whereas the family purchased little organic in the past. Emphasis was put on produce and whole grains.

“There were some ingredients I usually blew right past because I assumed they were out of my budget, like avocados or fresh ginger, but I was surprised to find just how reasonably priced they are – and they open up a whole new variety of foods that I can prepare,” says Martin. “I was also surprised to see that I can actually manage to make the switch to organic dairy. And I’m definitely going to pay more attention to the bulk foods section the next time I go shopping – I was shocked to see how much more affordable it is to buy things like whole grain rice that way rather than prepackaged!”

Why Do People Prefer Online Grocery Shopping

Internet has made our lives easier in more than one ways and has touched our routine life as well. Yes, you can now buy groceries online and without any geographical constraints. If you’re asking of why do people prefer buying grocery online as compared to shopping from a traditional Mom and Pop store? There are many advantages of online grocery shopping discussed below:

1. One can save time in terms of travelling to a grocery shop or supermarket, circling the parking lot looking for parking, standing in queue at the billing counter, loading the groceries in your car, and traveling back home.

2. One can spend less time if they buy grocery online rather than visiting a nearby grocery store because they are less likely to be side tracked and end up buying more than what they planned.
